This beer is the result of a joint effort by Gigantic Brewing Company from Portland, Oregon and Beau’s Brewing from near Ottawa, Ontario. Beau’s have created a kind of indie beer label called B-Side which collaborates with other renowned brewers to create beers to be brewed in Ontario.
The beer is sold as an American-Belgo IPA which is supposed to cross the bitter citrus hops of American IPA with the richer fruit flavours of Belgian yeast. When poured it looks promising as it has a cloudy appearance I usually associate with smooth German or Belgian wheat beers. The head is quite frothy and doesn’t hang around very long. Before the first drink the scent of bitter hops is very obvious with a slight hint of citrus spiciness.
When drinking the IPA there is a lot of the American style bitterness with some of the Belgian richness but I don’t think there is enough linking them. The beer is enjoyable but I am left feeling like there could be a lot more flavour and smoothness to allow the two styles in the beer to mesh more successfully.
